Au sud des cantons de l’Est, toute une série de parcs à éoliennes sont exploités depuis le passage au nouveau millénaire. Sur le territoire des communes d’Amblève, Bullange/Bütgenbach, Saint-Vith et Weismes se trouvent au total 25 éoliennes qui produisent ensemble près de 50 000 kW d’électricité.
L’implantation de ces installations controversées parmi les citoyens a suscité une vive polémique. Des espaces de compensation ont dû être mis à disposition comme zones de repli pour certaines espèces d’oiseaux (telles que le milan royal). Une participation citoyenne aux parcs à éoliennes par le biais de coopératives devrait favoriser le développement durable dans sa globalité.
