Le bâtiment de la direction d'Essen a été construit pour la direction royale des chemins de fer d'Essen, fondée en 1895. En 1922, elle est devenue la direction des chemins de fer du Reich à Essen. Après une destruction partielle pendant la Seconde Guerre mondiale et une reconstruction considérablement modifiée, le bâtiment a été le siège de la direction des chemins de fer fédéraux d'Essen entre 1951 et la réforme ferroviaire de 1994. Par la suite, le bâtiment marqué, mais qui n'est pas classé monument historique, est resté vacant pendant plusieurs années. Depuis octobre 2010, il abrite un centre de services de la Deutsche Bank.
