L'ensemble fortifié du Villard a été construit à partir du XIIe siècle par les évêques de Mende. C'est une fortification défensive érigée pour la protection du château de Chanac.
Les restes du donjon datent Moyen-Age, mais le bâtiment massif comportant des fenêtres à croisées nous vient du XVIe siècle.
L'église romane a été reprise à l'époque gothique, et est ornée de peintures murales.
