Il nome Julémont deriva da Mons Julius, "la montagna di Giulio (Cesare)". Secondo una storia, su cui gli storici non sono però d'accordo, Giulio Cesare avrebbe qui allestito un accampamento, perché un inverno fu bloccato da Ambiorix. Dopo quell'inverno, arrivarono rinforzi da Roma, dopo di che Ambiorix fu sconfitto lungo il fiume Berwinne, nel luogo dove ora si trova il villaggio di Mortroux, il cui nome significa "buco dei morti".
