Emmendingen è una città nel sud-ovest del Baden-Württemberg, situata a circa 14 km a nord di Friburgo in Brisgovia. Dal 1° gennaio 1973 Emmendingen è una Grande città circondariale e con 28.466 abitanti è la più grande città e il centro principale del distretto di Emmendingen. La città ha concordato una comunità amministrativa con i comuni di Freiamt, Malterdingen, Sexau e Teningen.
La città si trova nel Brisgovia tra la zona di avamposto della Foresta Nera e il Kaiserstuhl nella piana del Reno, a nord della cosiddetta baia di Friburgo, lungo il fiume Elz a un'altezza compresa tra 189 e 403 metri.
