La Papenkaule è il cratere secco provocato da un'esplosione freatica circa 10.000 anni fa nel dolomite della Munterley, che appartiene alla conca di Gerolstein, a nord di Gerolstein/Eifel.
La lava rilasciata dall'esplosione, però, non fluì dal camino della Papenkaule, ma emerse a ovest nella Hagelskaule e scorrendo verso sud come flusso lavico di Sarresdorf fino nella Kylltal. Poiché il dolomite nel sottosuolo della Papenkaule è permeabile all'acqua, non si formò un lago craterico.
