Il quartiere di Bochum-Innenstadt si trova nel centro di Bochum e nel distretto di Bochum-Mitte. È anche conosciuto come Bochum-City.
Nel Medioevo, Bochum era un tranquillo paesino, in particolare con case a graticcio. La città possedeva diritti municipali, ma non ha mai avuto una cinta muraria. Il medico e scrittore di Bochum Kortum creò una mappa nel 1790, che è ancora conservata. Le ultime strade con case a graticcio si trovavano nel quartiere dei conciatori vicino alla chiesa della provostura. Questa zona segna la parte più antica della città, che dovrebbe risalire a una corte reale di Carlo Magno. Molte altre strade del centro città si snodano in linea retta e sono strade in tradizione prussiana.
