Il villaggio medievale di IJzendijke scomparve intorno al 1400 a causa di maree tempestose. Circa 2 km a sud-ovest, successivamente, sorse un agglomerato abitativo in un punto più elevato nella zona allagata. Nel 1587, su incarico del comandante spagnolo Alessandro Farnese, duca di Parma, fu eretta una fortificazione. Più a ovest, gli spagnoli costruirono anche il reduto Boerenverdriet.
