Il Forte di Edam, come si chiama ufficialmente, è stato costruito all'inizio del ventesimo secolo come la parte situata più a nord-est della Linea di Amsterdam. Il compito principale del Forte di Edam era proteggere la regione di Amsterdam dagli attacchi nemici provenienti dal nord. Un elemento essenziale di quella difesa era anche l'inondazione della zona del polder a nord di Edam.
