Het was hier in het Kärntnertortheater dat Beethoven zijn Negende Symfonie voor het eerst aan het publiek liet horen op vrijdag 7 mei 1842. Het was een onverwacht maar groot succes. Beethoven stond er op dat hij ook op het podium stond, naast de dirigent om het tempo aan te geven. En dat was niet zo evident want naar wie moest het orkest dan kijken om het tempo te volgen. Daarenboven hadden ze maar 4 dagen gehad om het stuk in te oefenen.
