Montreuil-sur-Mer ligt nu niet bepaald aan de zee... De zee ligt op 15 km hiervandaan. Tot 1537 was deze stad welvarend, met een haven aan de rivier de Canche die rechtstreeks met de zee in verbinding stond. Maar alles verzande en toen ook Keizer Karel met zijn leger voorbij trok, was het mooie liedje definitief uit.
Victor Hugo schreef hier zijn boek 'Les Miserables'. De stad wordt dikwijls gebruikt door filmmakers.
