Gaasterland ligt in Nationaal Landschap Zuidwest Fryslân. De streek is, anders dan het overwegend vlakke weidekarakter van Friesland, juist glooiend en bosrijk. Het woord gaast (ook wel geest) duidt op hoger gelegen zandgrond.
In de voorlaatste ijstijd (Saalien) zijn door de druk van het landijs keileembulten ontstaan langs de lijn Texel-Wieringen-Gaasterland-Urk-Schokland-Vollenhove. Keileem is een mix van klei en stenen die onder de ijskap is gevormd (grondmorene).
In de laatste ijstijd (Weichselien) werd door de ijzig koude wind een dikke laag dekzand afgezet.
Vanwege de zandverstuivingen heeft Staatsbosbeheer, evenals elders in Nederland, het gebied rond 1900 beplant met bos.
Het hoogste punt van Gaasterland is 12,70 meter boven NAP ten zuidwesten van Oudemirdum aan de rand van het Jolderenbos (= elzenbos).
