Fra Uniebroen kan du i dag overvære den komplette IJzerfront, helt op til IJzertårnet i Diksmuide. Uniebroen er sammen med Schoorbakkebroen og Tervatebroen (Stuivekenskerke) livsvigtig. Den, der ejer broerne, hersker over IJzer.
Når situationen bliver uholdbar, sprænger belgierne broen i luften. Alligevel lykkes det tyskerne at krydse IJzer og tage Sint-Joris. Heldigvis bringer undervandshævelserne i sidste øjeblik redning.
Sint-Joris forbliver i fire år en tysk forpost tæt på sluserne i Nieuwpoort, hvorfra belgierne vedligeholder undervandshævelsen.
