Der Geschichtsschreiber Sanderus nannte Ninove ein wenig spöttisch "die älteste, die kühnste und die weiseste der Städte". In seinem "Flandria Illustrata" aus dem Jahr 1644 klingt das so: "Ninive quattor habet portas. Hae portae, quamvis possint, vix umquam clauduntur: unde vulgari loco Ninove dicitur antiquissima, audaccissima, sapientissima". Die älteste, weil ihr Name sich nur um einen Buchstaben von "Ninive" unterscheidet, zur damaligen Zeit die Hauptstadt von Assyrien im Alten Testament. Die kühnste, da sie, according to der Legende, den Feind mit offenen Toren zu empfangen wagte ... Die weiseste, weil ihre Versammlungen keinen Narren hatten. Wenn nötig, lieferte eine benachbarte Stadt den Narren ...
