Die Stadt Kalkar liegt am unteren Niederrhein im Nordwesten von Nordrhein-Westfalen und ist eine kreisangehörige Stadt des Kreises Kleve im Regierungsbezirk Düsseldorf. Sie ist Mitglied der Euregio Rhein-Waal. Eine frühere Schreibweise, gültig bis zum 9. Juni 1936, war Calcar.
Kalkar, das 1230 gegründet wurde und vermutlich 1242 Stadtrechte erhielt, zeichnet sich insbesondere durch ein mittelalterlich geprägtes Stadtbild aus.
