Der Oinnousai-Graben ist ein Unterwasser-Abgrund, der bis zur tiefsten Stelle des Mittelmeers reicht, mit 5.121 m. Das sind nur 146 Meter weniger als der tiefste Punkt im Mittelmeer, bekannt als der Calypso-Graben. Hier wird das "NESTOR"-Experiment durchgeführt, das mit Neutrinos und der Vergangenheit des Universums zu tun hat. Daten, einschließlich Signalen, werden über ein 30 km langes elektro-optisches Kabel, das auf dem Meeresboden verlegt ist, an die Küstenstation in Methoni übertragen. Dies ist das erste Mal, dass kontinuierliche, Echtzeit-"Physik"-Daten aus solch einer Tiefe gewonnen wurden, und stellt einen großen Schritt in Richtung eines kubischen Neutrinodetektors dar. Das NESTOR (Neutrino Extended Submarine Telescope with Oceanographic Research) wird letztendlich aus einem Turm mit 12 Etagen von 32 m Durchmesser bestehen.
