Buren ist eine Stadt mit einer reichen Geschichte und vielen Sehenswürdigkeiten. Die Stadt Buren erhielt 1395 das Stadtrecht. Die Befestigungsanlagen von Buren sind größtenteils noch intakt. Es gibt noch Wällen, Mauern und ein Stadttor. Buren kann sich Oranjestad nennen, wegen der Verbindung zur königlichen Familie. Wilhelm von Oranien heiratete 1551 Anna von Egmont, Gräfin von Buren. König Willem-Alexander ist daher Graf von Buren.
In Buren stand eines der größten Schlösser der Niederlande: Haus Buren. Das Schloss wurde 1804 von der Regierung zum Abriss verkauft. Mit den verkauften Steinen wurden Häuser restauriert und völlig neue Häuser gebaut. Diese Häuser werden in Buren jetzt oft "Schlosshäuser" genannt.
