Laren wurde nach der Ankunft der Straßenbahnlinie nach Hilversum und Amsterdam, bekannt als der Gooise Moordenaar, 1892 auch zu einem Künstler- und Pendlerdorf. Im 19. Jahrhundert wurden die Gooise Dörfer von Künstlern entdeckt, die dort die Larener Schule gründeten. Einige bekannte Maler, die in Laren verweilten, waren Anton Mauve (Lehrer von Vincent van Gogh), Jan Sluijters und Ferdinand Hart Nibbrig.
