Tessenderlo may be derived from the contraction of Taxandria (the Kempen in Roman times) and the Latin locus or place. Locally, it is referred to as "Looi," and the residents of this municipality are called "Looienaars."
In Tessenderlo, one can visit the St. Martin's Church (14th-15th century) with its stone pulpit, the St. Lucia Church, the deanery in the market square, the "Gerhagen" nature area Bosmuseum, and the black market.
