The charming Borgloon, once founded on a Haspengouw hilltop and capital of the Land van Loon, is an excellent base for a glimpse into the past. Borgloon, together with its boroughs, has twelve castles, but also has much more to offer, especially in the vicinity of the Speelhof, the square near the Sint-Odolfuskerk and the Canons' House (18th century). The church was built in the 12th century in Romanesque style, but its tower was given a Gothic dress in the 14th century. The church houses many interesting art treasures and church furniture, such as an early Gothic triumphal cross, murals from the 16th century, a baroque choir stall, confessionals from the 18th century and statues from the 13th to 19th centuries. Near the church and somewhat hidden behind the library is the Castle Hill where you have a fantastic view over Haspengouw. Especially during the blossom period, this is a unique viewpoint. Once the castle of the counts of Loon stood here. Unfortunately, it was demolished in 1870. Not far from the Speelhof, the house of the then count was built in 1680, the so-called 's-Grevenhuis. The building serves as a town hall and tourist office and houses, among other things, a treasury from the 12th century and a pain bank from the 17th century. It goes without saying that you can go to the surroundings of the Speelhof for a snack and a drink. On the territory of the borough of Kuttekoven lies the beautiful castle of Rullingen. In the VRT series Katarakt, this is the place where the meetings of the service club take place.
