Lake Stymphalia is heaven for an ornitologist, but also for those loving mythology, because this was the area where the Stymphalian birds lived. These were man-eating birds with wings of brass and sharp metallic feathers they could launch at their victims, and were pets of Ares, the god of war. Furthermore, their dung was highly toxic. It was one of the 12 tasks of Heracles to get rid of the birds. From Athena and Hephaestus, he got huge bronze clappers to scare the birds. He could shoot the birds in their flight.
