Who are the Ladins? There is no Dutch word for the inhabitants of Ladinia, but they themselves call themselves Ladins: 30,000 inhabitants of five valleys that radiate from the Sella Plateau like the arms of a starfish. Their language, along with Reto-Romance in Switzerland and Friulian in northeastern Italy, represents the last remnants of the once widely spoken Celtic-Roman in the Alps. Ladin culture has many legends, in which the woman usually decides. If a man has the say-so, disaster follows. More about the Ladins at www.vejin.com and www.istladin.net.
