In Streekbos you’ll also find a nature trail managed by IVN West-Friesland. This tranquil area of around two hectares can be accessed via a small bridge over the water. It is not suitable for dogs or visitors with limited mobility. Waterproof shoes are recommended in wet weather. Since the area was redesigned in 1996, changes in elevation, gently sloping banks and three small islands have helped increase biodiversity. For example, you’ll find a pond for amphibians, a wildflower meadow, pollarded trees, and many rare birds, plants and insects. A purification ditch with a helophyte filter keeps the polder water crystal clear. Bacteria among the reed roots break down excess nutrients such as phosphates and nitrates.
