Aquí es donde se encontraba antiguamente la antigua aldea de Ixelles, una de las 19 comunas de Bruselas. El Maelbeek, que nace un poco más arriba cerca de la Abadía de La Cambre, formaba aquí estanques naturales en los que los monjes criaban peces. Dos de estos estanques aún son visibles, el tercero ha sido rellenado y transformado para crear esta plaza. El Maelbeek, por su parte, ha sido cubierto. El magnífico edificio del Instituto Nacional de Radiodifusión, que emitió de 1930 a 1960, es un edificio Art déco clasificado del arquitecto Diongre, apodado "el Transatlántico".
