El historiador Sanderus llamó a Ninove un poco en broma "la más antigua, la más audaz y la más sabia de las ciudades". En su "Flandria Illustrata" de 1644 suena así: "Ninive quattor habet portas. Hae portae, quamvis possint, vix umquam clauduntur: unde vulgari loco Ninove dicitur antiquissima, audaccissima, sapientissima". La más antigua, porque su nombre solo difiere en una letra de "Ninive", que en su momento fue la capital de Asiria en el viejo testamento. La más audaz, porque, según la leyenda, se atrevió a esperar al enemigo con las puertas abiertas... La más sabia, porque sus asociaciones no tenían bufón. Si era necesario, una ciudad vecina proporcionaba el bufón...
