La primera piedra del ayuntamiento fue colocada en 1428. En los siglos XVI y XVIII se llevaron a cabo grandes reformas. Entre 1875 y 1880 se construyó un nuevo ayuntamiento neogótico. Tras las destrucciones de la Primera Guerra Mundial 1914-1918, los arquitectos recurrieron a elementos constructivos tomados del estilo renacentista flamenco regional. En la fachada principal, los anclajes de la pared forman dos veces el año 1923. La nueva torre del campanario se erigió en el patio interior, como un típico símbolo flamenco y medieval de la libertad urbana.
