La Vismarkt ya se mencionaba en el siglo XIII. La plaza se formó debido a su ubicación junto a un antiguo brazo del Dijle y era el lugar de un puerto interior de Lovaina. Era el sitio de mucho comercio y actividad portuaria y el lugar de residencia de los pescadores. El mercado de pescado es el mercado más antiguo de la ciudad.
