La Agencia de Naturaleza y Bosques (gobierno flamenco) gestiona unas 400 hectáreas del bosque, otras partes todavía están en gestión privada. Una gran parte, el Maldegemveld, está bajo la gestión de Natuurpunt. El bosque Drongengoed es conocido por su gran variedad de hongos y polillas nocturnas. Pero también la variedad de bosques de hoja caduca y coníferas alternados con praderas húmedas y brezos atrae a muchas especies de plantas y animales. Los numerosos caminos y filas de árboles son importantes "autopistas ecológicas" por las que las plantas y los animales pueden migrar con facilidad. No es de extrañar que el Drongengoed-Maldegemveld, incluido el aeropuerto, esté protegido a nivel europeo.
