El centro de Nieuwkerke se alza en lo alto de la línea de cumbres. En la Edad Media, el pueblo contaba con muchos más habitantes que ahora. Desde el siglo XIV hasta 1582, cuando un incendio redujo a cenizas gran parte del centro, era un próspero centro textil que competía con Ypres. El ayuntamiento con fachada de escalera y pórtico, decorado con dos leones, aún da testimonio de esa prosperidad medieval. Nieuwkerke fue devastado por el fuego en cinco ocasiones: en 1477, 1582, 1647, 1795 y, finalmente, en 1918. La iglesia neogótica de Nuestra Señora, construida en 1922, se hizo según los planos de la antigua iglesia gótica de alrededor de 1600.
