La iglesia de Barneveld es famosa por Jan van Schaffelaar, quien según la tradición saltó de la torre en 1482. Esa no es la torre actual de la iglesia, que data de 1828. La historia tuvo lugar durante las disputas de Hoekse y Kabeljouwse. Jan van Schaffelaar era 'Kabeljouw' y se había atrincherado con aliados en la torre porque estaban siendo asediados por soldados Hoekse provenientes de Amersfoort y Nijkerk. Para salvar a sus compañeros soldados, Jan van Schaffelaar saltó de la torre y sobrevivió a la caída. Fue asesinado en el acto por sus enemigos. La estatua en la Plaza de la Torre está en este lugar desde 1903.
