El Groote Gat es una zona natural especial y una joya de la cultura e historia a la vez. Las fortificaciones que formaron parte de las Líneas Españolas del Estado durante la Guerra de los Ochenta Años (1568-1648) todavía son visibles aquí. Estas fortificaciones se encuentran en un paisaje variado. El Groote Gat consta de un gran canal, rodeado de campos de juncos, arbustos, setos, árboles cortados y praderas húmedas. Esto crea un paisaje variado donde viven diferentes aves reproductoras raras.
El canal en el Groote Gat fue una vez parte de un extenso sistema de canales que estaba conectado con el Zwin. El Groote Gat es un remanente del canal de Brujas. Este canal se excavó entre 1501 y 1505 para combatir el encenagamiento del Zwin, pero el efecto deseado no se logró.
