Después de que Alemania tuvo que devolver el cuadro El cordero de Dios a Bélgica, como se establece en el Tratado de Versalles, y los belgas vieron venir la amenaza de la Segunda Guerra Mundial, en 1940 se decidió otorgar al cuadro un refugio seguro en el Vaticano. Cuando el cuadro estaba en camino al Vaticano, Italia declaró la guerra junto con Alemania y los planes fueron ajustados. Se decidió llevar el cuadro a Pau, en Francia.
