À l’époque médiévale, la ville était remarquablement riche grâce au commerce du sel. Il y avait plusieurs salines autour de la ville. Le sel était exporté vers les fiefs voisins. Le long de l’ancienne route du sel, il était transporté via Lauenburg jusqu’à Lübeck et de là expédié vers toutes les côtes de la Baltique.
