Le château des Lions aurait été construit par les comtes de Dassel comme pavillon de chasse. Vers 1250, il est mentionné lors dun changement de propriétaire aux Welfs et sert de siège administratif du bureau de Lauenburg des ducs de Brunswick-Lunebourg de 1399 à 1530.
