Le Hortus Botanicus est l'un des plus anciens jardins botaniques au monde (1682), à l'origine destiné à être un jardin de plantes médicinales.
Dans le laboratoire Hugo de Vries (1912) de l'architecte Joan van der Meij, on peut déjà reconnaître certains éléments du style de l'École d'Amsterdam dans la maçonnerie décorative.
Dans la Plantage Parklaan, au numéro 9, vivait le généticien Hugo de Vries. Il a eu son propre portillon juste en face de sa maison. Par ce portillon, vous avez une vue directe sur la Gunnera (une plante avec des feuilles de mammouth d'un diamètre pouvant atteindre 2,50 mètres).
Un peu plus loin se trouve la magnifique Palmenkas, qui a été spécialement construite pour honorer Hugo de Vries.
