Au XIIIe siècle, Marken a été séparée du continent pendant les tempêtes. Cela a entraîné une période d'isolement de plusieurs siècles pour les habitants, qui vivaient de la pêche. Ce n'est qu'en 1957 que Marken a été reliée au continent par une digue, et depuis lors, c'est une péninsule.
Pour se protéger contre les inondations, les habitants ont construit jusqu'au XVIIe siècle leurs caractéristiques maisons (vertes) en bois sur des tertres, qu'ils appelaient eux-mêmes 'werven'. Par la suite, les maisons ont été construites sur pilotis.
Depuis la construction de la digue de fermeture (1932), l'île ne souffre plus d'inondations, mais les maisons typiques sont restées.
