Pour contrôler le commerce sur l'important fleuve Hudson, la Compagnie des Indes Occidentales ou WIC, a établi des appels ici à New Amsterdam. Mais la colonie était menacée par les Indiens et attaquée par les Britanniques. La WIC a construit un mur ici pour se défendre. Ce mur est le nom de l'une des rues les plus célèbres du monde : Wall Street. Le mur est marqué sur la carte de Jacques Cortelyou, gouverneur général de New Amsterdam à cette époque.
