Le Dakota était la maison de l'ancien Beatle John Lennon à partir de 1973, et a été le lieu du meurtre de Lennon par Mark David Chapman le 8 décembre 1980. En 2010, la femme et veuve de Lennon, Yoko Ono, possède encore plusieurs appartements dans le bâtiment. Le mémorial Strawberry Fields a été aménagé en mémoire de Lennon dans Central Park, juste en face de Central Park West.
