Il comune di Hekelgem ha acquistato l'azienda di lavorazione del legno "Boplaco", diventata centro amministrativo comunale "Bellekouter". Il 1 dicembre 1979 questo centro è stato ufficialmente inaugurato.
Nel 1980 il nome del comune "Hekelgem" è stato ufficialmente cambiato in "Affligem". Da allora sono state apportate ulteriori modifiche al centro comunale, come la costruzione dell'edificio della polizia con magazzini (1981), la palestra “Bellekouter” e il Centro Culturale “Sanderus” (1999). Sul tetto statue di Patrick Van Craenenbroeck: “Io, tu, noi”.
