Wettelroda è stata menzionata per la prima volta in documenti storici nel periodo 830-850. Il sindaco è Tim Schultze dal 28 aprile 2016. Fino al 2005 Wettelrode era un comune politicamente autonomo. Il 1° ottobre 2005 è stata incorporata a Sangerhausen.
Al margine occidentale dell'ex villaggio minerario si trova il pozzo Röhrig, dove un tempo veniva estratto il minerale di rame. Durante i tempi della DDR, serviva come pozzo di ventilazione del pozzo di Thomas Müntzer. È l'unico museo minerario con propria funivia in Sassonia-Anhalt.
