La mappa superiore di Methoni risale alla seconda metà del XVII secolo. Si può già vedere qualche abitazione al di fuori delle mura della città fortificata, ma la cresta su cui ora è costruita la maggior parte di Methoni era ancora quasi vuota. L'occupazione di quell'area avvenne solo subito dopo la rivoluzione greca nella prima metà del XIX secolo. Poi alcuni ingegneri francesi elaborarono il primo piano urbanistico per una città nel nuovo stato greco: la moderna Methoni. Quel piano risale al 1829. Il piano ricevette anche la firma di Kapodistrias, il primo leader della Grecia, per l'approvazione.
