Il 1 novembre 1570, la costa olandese e fiamminga è colpita da un'enorme inondazione nota come la Faglia di Ognissanti. Molte città furono colpite come Egmond, Bergen op Zoom e Saeftinghe. Ma alcuni villaggi furono addirittura completamente sommersi e vengono chiamati i villaggi annegati (Avenkerke sull'isola Wulpen, Cornsant sull'isola Bosch nel Mare dei Wadden, Klaaskinderkerke a Schouwen-Duiveland, Koezand alla foce dello Schelda occidentale, Moggershil a ovest di Tholen, Westende sull'isola Wulpen).
