Laren divenne un villaggio di artisti e pendolari nel 1892, dopo l'arrivo della linea tranviaria per Hilversum e Amsterdam, conosciuto come il Göisie Murderer. Nel XIX secolo i villaggi gooies furono scoperti dagli artisti che vi stabilirono la Scuola di Laren. Alcuni noti pittori che rimasero a Laren furono Anton Mauve (maestro di Vincent van Gogh), Jan Sluijters e Ferdinand Hart Nibbrig.
