Van de Heilige Bavo is niet zoveel gekend. Na zijn missiewerk met de Heilige Amandus zou Bavo toestemming gekregen hebben om als kluizenaar te leven in het bos achter de abdij van Sint Pieters. Hij stierf waarschijnlijk rond 650 en werd begraven in de door Amandus gestichte Sint-Pieterskerk die gelegen was in de huidige buurt van de Sint-Baafsabdij. Je kan nog steeds de bekering zien van de Heilige Bavo op een schilderij van Rubens in de Sint-Baafskatherdraal.
