Aalst is het meest bekend om zijn jaarlijks carnaval en ook wel om zijn 'Zwarte Man', het standbeeld van Dirk Martens in het midden van de Grote Markt. Dirk Martens drukte het eerste boek met losse letters in de Nederlanden. Een al even beroemde telg is de romanschrijver Louis Paul Boon. Aalst maakte in het begin van de 20e eeuw ook een stukje van de Belgische politieke geschiedenis met als centrale figuur priester Adolf Daens, over wie Louis Paul Boon overigens zijn beroemdste boek 'Pieter Daens of hoe in de 19e eeuw de arbeiders van Aalst vochten tegen armoede en onrecht' (1971) schreef. Aalst dankte vroeger zijn welvaart onder andere aan de hopteelt. De kathedraal van Amiens was het voorbeeld voor de Aalsterse Sint-Maartenskerk die echter niet werd afgewerkt. (bron: wikipedia)
