In 1858 wordt de spoorlijn Brussel-Luxemburg ingehuldigd. Wanneer in 1873 de spoorwegen eigendom worden van de Belgische Staat wordt er een station gebouwd. Het oude houten station wordt vervangen door een imposant gebouw dat wordt opgetrokken in Lotharingse kalksteen en blauwe steen. Het is de architect VAN DE WIJNGAERT die de plannen tekent (1884-1885). Rond het station ontstaat een nieuwe buurt met burgershuizen in Art Nouveau stijl maar ook een bescheiden kwartier waar de spoorwegarbeiders werden gehuisvest (Schoppach). De avenue de la Gare werd gerenoveerd in 2002-2003. Het Mercuriusmonument op de rotonde is het werk van de beeldhouwster Bettina Scholl-Sabbatini.
