Groppendorf werd in 1112 voor het eerst genoemd als Grippendorf. In 1910 woonden er 209 mensen in de landgemeente Groppendorf en 74 in het Gutsbezirk Groppendorf. Op 30 september 1928 werd het Gutsbezirk Groppendorf samengevoegd met de landgemeente Groppendorf. In 1933 werd de nog steeds bestaande vrijwillige brandweer in het dorp opgericht. Op 1 juli 1950 werd Groppendorf ingelijfd bij Hakenstedt. Op 1 januari 2010 vond de herindeling naar Erxleben plaats.
In het dorp staat de St. Marienkerk, die uit het begin van de 13e eeuw stamt. Verder zijn er monumentale gebouwen zoals de boerderij aan de Dorfstraße 7 en de Veltheimsche Gutshof aan de Dorfstraße 13, 15, die toebehoorde aan de familie van Veltheim op kasteel Harbke.
