In 1485 arriveerde Columbus berooid in de haven van Parlos. Hij bracht de nacht door in het nabijgelegen franciscaner klooster La Rábida, waar reizigers gratis konden overnachten. Vanuit deze haven vertrok hij zeven jaar later, op 3 augustus 1492, met de Pinta, Niña en Santa María. Dit tafereel werd geschilderd door Evaristo Dominguez. De drie schepen landden op 12 oktober 1492 in Amerika. De Santa María verging in Amerikaanse wateren, maar de andere twee schepen keerden op 15 maart 1493 terug naar Palos.
