Het monument voor admiraal Mendez Núñez, die bekend staat als “de held van Callao”, werd ingewijd in 1892. De beroemde zin “Je hebt beter eer zonder schepen dan schepen zonder eer” is geschreven op een bronzen blad aan de voet van de schild van Vigo, twee takken van de laurier en een zwaard.
