Het bisdom of diocesie van Sogorb-Castelló werd opgericht bij decreet van de Heilige Congregatie van de Consistorie in 1960, in overeenstemming met het Concordaat van 1953, op basis van een herstructurering van de grenzen tussen de bisdommen van Valencia-Sogorb-Tortosa.
Tussen de jaren 1160 en 1168 werd de Navarrese ridder Pero Ruiz d'Açagra heer van Albarrasí en hij wenste de vermeende oude bisdom van het gebied opnieuw op te richten, maar Paus Adrianus IV gaf de kerk van de stad aan die van Zaragoza, een besluit genomen door Alfons de Cast, die het ook aan die zetel gaf.
